Our introduction to keeping chickens, the high's, the lows and pics of our journey.

I am guessing they are about 4-5 weeks old too? I am leaning towards white and light coloured being female, the darker one is on the fence for another week. If that (or any) of those combs start turning pink then I would be going with a boy. If they stay yellow and don't get much bigger then I would lean towards all three being pullets.

Another week or so should be more confident.
nope, only three weeks old yesterday for two of them and today for one of them

Hmmm, I am going to stick with my guess, but not as confident lol.

A question for CB as he may be most experienced on the breed, happy to hear what any has to say though.

The nicest laced blue Australorp pullets come from a black roo over a blue hen, can we still achieve the same if we put one of our blue boys over a black? I am sure you have given this consideration before.

Also interested to know if the same result of blue with black lacing is possible if we put a blue roo over a first generation BVxAra's or BAxAra's?

Today was pretty busy, but I did manage to have another go at a temp run for the younger birds. Chose to use the fence line for more space and under a tree for shade. Between the fence, tree, tractor and ply boards they have grass and shade all day.

Whats a story without pics though!

The ply is two part so it can be slide along for walk in access. Certainly not cat proof but should deter any of the crows snatching a chick during the day. They go to the brooder at night for the next week or so, then will get locked in the tractor after dusk. Hope to start to move some on to new home in about 2 weeks and lighten my feed bill!

Hopefully they leave some grass behind there after two weeks!

Hi Ben,
Blue roo x Black hen will give very nicely laced blues. Here is a pullet I bred from this mating. Not a great photo but you will see the great lacing. Possibly the best coloured blue I have ever bred. Lacking in other areas but colour wise very good. Unfortunately she died suddenly a few months ago.

You should get some decent blues from a blue lorp/Ara x Australorp mating. Depends with the Lorp/Ara x BV mating as you may get some leakage.
Generally better coloured birds come from pure breeds as genes are not as diverse. Hope this has somewhat helped.
I sense that you may be keeping a blue lorp roo now lol.....

Hahahaha, you had to have expected it from me lol

I have been torn which roo to keep, and I only just considered keeping a blue roo, as it was going to be a Maran's or Coronation. But now I could make my OWN blues! Mwhahahahahaha

Thanks you for your help, certainly brightened my evening.

Check out this egg I got today! It was TEENY! I waited til my kids got home so I could show them, and then we cracked it open.

My 3 eggs for the day... and a penny.

For comparison: a regular G.Comet egg, a bantam cochin egg, and my Teeny egg from today!

AND AMAZINGLY IT HAD A YOLK! It was about the size of a pencil eraser.

That's cool! Did you explain to the kids, that had it hatched, it would have been a midget, dwarf. :lau

I have to say... that is a really little yolk... BUT I have got you beat on the tiny yolk... gotta find the pic....

ANYWAY... Nearing the big 4oh here... Yup. I started late on the whole family thing... lol When I was a kid, I used to run all the time. I started running in co-ed gym. Yup, took that every year, because, like come on, all the foot ball team and soccer team was in co-ed gym. LOL. It was a guy thing. Then I had joined a gym in my late 20s... about 28-29 and went religiously for 3 years until I got preggo with the first boy. I ended up with hip displacement, and OH MA GOD! Was walking a serious difficulty. Getting out of bed and being able to stand up was a 5 minute challenge. I ended up having to quit the gym then, and the weight pilled on. Lost it, then kid number 2, weight again, then dad became very ill, and for the next several years, time was taken between the two monkey's and the elderly parents. SO, I finally rejoined the gym, planet fitness, and now I am too tired to go, BUT winter will be in full swing here soon, and I won't be mowing the lawn or cleaning the coops until spring. SOOO, maybe I'll start on the treadmill, since those one at the gym are supposed to help with the shock. That and a really tight over the shoulder. LOL.

Yes, the garage is going to be full of the wierdo combos soon. Two weeks from Sunday. Hopefully that silkie Sole' isn't as hot blooded as her mama was. Always 2 days early.

Going to take advantage of the warm snap... hopefully the weather hold for one more day, and all the yard work will be complete!

Love the blue hen too.

That was the first egg Texas laid after coming out of a molt. She's a blue cuckoo maran. I had NEVER seen one that small and still have a yolk! Yestday I got a wind egg from someone else, no yolk. Now if only I had a hen that did that all the time. I could sell free range, natural fed egg whites! LOL

Wee little eggs, we have had a couple fo those.

CB, I checked out your Blue Roo's, very cool. I will need to get some close up pics of our boys, one is much darker than the other, but the light one seems to have a sign of the dark lacing.

I have been looking over our little guys very closely.....which one to keep?!

I also noticed in your profile pic, you have chicks on straw. Is that what you usually brood on or is it a mix or just a once off? I recently went back to pine shavings and shudder at the price of more. I am curious to know if it's safe to change to straw once the chicks have their 'legs' sorted and know what their food is etc. Sometime around the 4 week mark or so?

Anyone else change to straw or a mix for the brooder?
