Our introduction to keeping chickens, the high's, the lows and pics of our journey.

We were part of the lucky group. We only lost power for 20 hours. Of course... just long enough that I couldnt get a shower before work. Yuck. First thing I did when I got home, after brewing my tea of course, was drown in the shower. There are downfalls to living in the boonies, and not having solar or wind power to keep us going. I keep promising myself that 'this year, I am going to get those solar panels built' and each year passes with me not having any time off of work to get anything done.

Sunday morning, just before the nastiness hit, I inherited Mocha from Peep-Chicken. He is an absolutely beautiful rooster, and I can't wait to be able to breed him. Lets see if I can manage to retrieve some photos.

There are a lot of breeds I wouldn't recognize so I could be way off, but he looks like he could be and EE/faverolles- his coloring and comb - do you know what his parentage is? Cute. I saw on the Michigan thread that you were adopting him from Peep. Boonies - haha - I thought everyone said that! We're there too.

I'm so far out that the cable Co. only laughs when I respond to their phone sale pitch! I ended up getting a generator, it helps alot with several day power outages we get.

the boondocks or BFE...

Looks like a just a strait up EE. Got a friend with an EE that I thought was a fav cross too, but she said nope, that that fav look in EE's was quite common.

Glad your favies aren't being pecked. Sure could be just a genetic thing. BUT that said, if they both have it, they are both probably bro and sis and therefore... might not want to breed together but ONCE, then line breed after, unless you can get a pullet or 3 from a different source. I don't breed bro to sister here. You're just asking for trouble if you have to do it more than once. Line breeding after a bro and sister breed, probably will create its own problems also... Just saying... English and Egyptian monarchies...

I didn't ask them what breed. But I can't wait to breed him. I have a white girl with a tan neck that I think would put off some awesome color combos with him.

All my free rangers are buddying up to him. It will be interesting to see how tge girls react once they can see and hear him. (Right now, they can only hear him.)

Yeah, cable laughs... or offers at the price of $600/foot to run the half mile to our house. Um... no. I am good with the free network programming and my antique looking antenna. Took a while to find a cell system that had a signal out here. Verizon is even a non-roaming signal, at that! Lol. Besides, I am not particularly fond of neighbors.

Lol- I work for a Verizon store :) Not fond of neighbors either - I don't have any that I can see easily from my house, and I don't know them any more than to wave if they're in the yard when I drive past. I love people, but I like seclusion when I'm at home.

Coronation Sussex hatch update.

We saw some wiggling on Day 18, but Day 19 we did not see a single movement. Granted, neither Alicia or I were not there 100% of the time, but we both did often stare into there looking for confirmation of life.

With both our incubators, we normally start to see some action a bit early, early pippers Day 19 making their way our Day 20. SO not seeing anything began to play on my mind. A combination of one very odd shaped air cell, potential for mushy chicks (some of the broken eggs had liquid onto good eggs which I only wiped over with paper towel)

To put my mind at rest, I candled two of the eggs on the Night of Day 19 (Don't hate on breaching the lock down, there were no pips so I figured it was safe to candle) Of the two, I could see tiny movement, which was good enough for me. No internal pipping.

Day 20 comes around, no movement and no pip's.............until almost 11pm! We got our first. The one I least expected to make it of the three with a really big side mounted aircell. It pipped on the air cell line, but as you can see, it's in a very unusual spot.

I still have some concerns about how it can turn to zip with a side mounted air cell, so far I have not touched it but it looks as though it has attempted to zip a little.

The other two have not pipped yet, fingers crossed that these three make it. I know we still have more time before getting too stressed as we are only part way into Day 21 but I also don't want to loose any of these well travelled parcels!

Of all days, today I have to head out for work lol
