Our introduction to keeping chickens, the high's, the lows and pics of our journey.

*Pout* so, apparently, I have a not so good broody. She is great for hatching, but can't keep her chicks alive. This was her second hatch and both had great hatch rates. But she does not seem to maintain the protective instinct long enough for them to even get their feathers in. All 7 babies are now gone.

They were gone yesterday, but work is doing me in really well. As I sit right now, the muscles in my legs are giving the warning signs that I won't be getting much sleep tonight. Anyone want to borrow a calcium disorder for a few days? Promise I will take it back by Wednesday. Lol. 4 day weekend gives time to recover.

. We're not all born to be mums. If I could bare your burden for just a few days , I surely would. Here's praying for your next 4 day weekend. :hugs
Sorry for your loss.

Thats terrible news EM.

We just got home from a wedding out in the country. The 5 week old birds were still in their run. Had hoped they were inside the little tractor, but no of course they are not. They choose to huddle behind the door in the open. At least they were nice and docile to transport back to the brooder. Maybe next week we will take them off the heat.

In the big coop, I had to pull the SPW and Rosie the RIR out of a nest box and put them back on a perch. I wish they would make up their crazy little chicken minds!

In the wee lil chick department, all is well. First few little droppings are evident and they are more spritely getting about in there. Pleased that stress is over for now. Was pretty intense for a couple of days there!

I need to work Tomorrow (Sunday) to catch up on some stuff, so Alicia and the kids will be holding the fort, may be thin on updates.

These coronation are really keeping you on your toes. I am glad to hear that they are on their way. I gave 6 little wylkies away yesterday. That was fun, running around in the rain catching them. Momma was non too impressed, we left her with 2. Busy day with showjumping today, will check in for updates this Arvo.
When it stops raining I'll get some pics of the coro's that I've just taken out from the heat lamp/ brooder. Have a great Sunday.

Ben - So glad the little ones are doing better!

EM - Sorry about your broody :( I know some chickens have more tendency to broodiness, but is it something that improves each time or are they just "made" that way?

Not sure. I have 1 mama who kept 2 of her 3 alive and well, and she still makes sure they get in the trees each night. I am looking forward to seeing how well our 'breeding program' will go in the spring. Perhaps I will be able to answer this qiestion then.

Thanks team, just walked in the door and at first glance all is well. Seems Rosie the the SPW are pretty certain they want to be mums. I am about to make some adjustments to the rooster box to convert it to a low nest box.

If one of the girls takes the move, she can hatch something, but if they refuse to relocate from the main nest box then it will be a long wait for nothing. Hope it's not catchy...only got 3 eggs today lol.

I would love to leave them up there, but I think it's too high for chicks, and I have no way of getting them a separate feed to the main flock, so broody box or empty nest. I will try the move after dark.

The Coro's are doing well.

Oz, best of luck up there, hope this next hatch for you goes nice and smooth.
