Our introduction to keeping chickens, the high's, the lows and pics of our journey.

That's awesome, I love incubating, I have done well not to set anymore hahahaha

It's just so exciting every little turn or candle, when lock down comes I am sure I lived on just 2 hours proper sleep!

for you!

I candled our first incubator full of eggs tonight! I'm excited! We set 33, there were 3 definite clears, 5-6 that we couldn't see through, and the rest had veins!

My 12 were just popped into the incubator an hour ago:D

Well, I may have gotten excited too soon..... The wind knocked power out here for several hours, and the incubator got down to 82*..... I'm hoping it didn't kill everything in there.....

Oh no! Hopefully it wasn't cool for more than a few hours, but it's surprising how resilient those eggs can be to cool down, but in nature those broodies take breaks too. Mine got delayed 12 hours. A couple hours after setting mine the incubator malfunctioned. I took the eggs out til I straightened it out today. They were only at full temp a short time so I think they'll be fine. Hoping I fixed the issue!

I have read some people bring them up to temp to begin with and let them cool off before a proper set. I think @ozexpat may have talked about it.

If you think of nature, as the clutch is being laid she will be on them and off them for a up to a week as she adds more eggs before she finally settles in for the long haul, so some early fluctuations should not cause any grief.

Just a quick one from my phone.....look what my boy found this afternoon!

The one on the right we think belongs to Summer the wellie.

Also, here is Luna (BA) from yesterday, quite purple!

People can vote for that kind of thing? How does that work? Thanks!

In some other EXCITING news, I watched Sal the Salmon Faverolle lay an egg today! I have been busy down the run removing some of the wire, pruning the Passionfruit vines and installing some recovered patio roofing.

WIll be part solid roofing, and part wire mesh with the three vines providing filtered light.

I will grab some snaps to share later this afternoon.
