Our introduction to keeping chickens, the high's, the lows and pics of our journey.

Ok, so I dug out my faithful Canon and took some pictures. So now I'm going to spam some photos here, sorry Ben. But who doesn't like chicken pictures =)

On a side note, the neighbors kids class came for a visit today to look at our birdies. When asked what temperature they think eggs need to be kept at so they hatch, one answered "100 degrees" (We use Celsius here). Might make for some pretty hard-boiled eggs after 21 days...

This chicken photographing takes some getting used to though, they're quick little buggers, aren't they.

Don't tempt me, I might dig out the SLR and snap a few hundred pics of the feathered little fellows... Shame about the Wyandotte, I sure hope all of ours are quick to start pushing out some lovely colourful little bum nuts as you say. Store bought organic eggs taste ok, but nothing compares to homo grown.

*Edit, home grown was what I meant. I'm sure the sexual orientation of the bird/birdkeeper doesn't affect the taste.
Hahahaha, the old bum nuts had me going, I was roaring by 'homo' lol Funny typo. I heard a story never to sign off a email with 'Regard's' as the letter 't' and 'g' are too close for comfort. Imagine sending that to a customer!!

Yes, some of ours hang around for pictures, the other take off. They took our egg production conversations quite literally.

Some great shots there, do you know the sex's, the barred birds has some advanced comb and wattle going on and I see red wings on the white bird. I am not sure of the breed specifics but that is a sign of a male in EE's

Can you have roo's?

There are three roos, the white one, and the ones with barring. Bigger ones will be introduced to the grill at some point. We might keep the little one.

*Edit* Oh, and the white one is a SS

I gave all 5 of the chicks to the broody sisters. They are doing great with them and tuck them away when I open the door to the coop.

This looks great. We incubated our chicks our selves, and didn't have any adult chickens yet, so they were just among themselves in the brooder. They are cute, but I have to admit, baby chicks do get a bit boring after a while. Now that they're a bit older, it's much more interesting to follow what they're up to. I'd like to try with a broody at some point, because that way you get to experience their maternal instincts kicking in, I'm guessing there's a whole lot more to follow than with just the little ones.

Good luck with your surrogates!

Very cool!

Well, I think I have some new news too. Sal the Salmon Fav spent a very long time on the nest today, even after she laid her egg. I got her off there, but found her back on it at bedtime.

The day after I talk about a broody and we might just have one!

Question is....how many of what do I give her? Are your girls laying at the moment @Fancychooklady ?

Hmmm

Hmmm

I could send you a mixed dozen. Coro, silkie and blue laced red Wyandotte . Oh the temptation .

That sounds pretty much perfect I think!! She was off the nest at scratch time, but sort of wandered around in a bit of a daze, then cam e into the coop making some weird noise and fluffed up, jumped in the nest and has not been out since!

I will send you a PM! You have tempted me at just the right time! If she changes her mind I have two incubators to finish the job off.

Ben, be careful here. It looks like you are a easy pushover for a pretty chick!
