Our introduction to keeping chickens, the high's, the lows and pics of our journey.

When I got home (yes I stopped at the feed store but all the chicks were considerably older) I checked in on Betty. The little chick is healthy and happy. Betty is taking good care of him/her.

Any more updates on yours Ben?

Thats good news Pam.

Nothing new going on in ours, today is Day 21 so we hope to see a pip later today, but I will not be surprised if the action does not start until tomorrow.

Today's agenda includes cleaning up some clutter in my office and setting up the multi coloured brooder box. Maybe a bit of music might help drag them out of their shells!

We have one silkie pip, but I have not seen much from the BLRW, must be wiggling when I am not looking!

I am also out of chick starter and I don't have enough pine shavings for the brooder box.

Best to head out and get some supplies.

Soon you will be a chick mommy again, Ben.

We studied the chickens for about half an hour this morning, Viiru was checking outvthe eggnests in a promising way... maybe soon we'll have our own eggs. Taneli, who is now three months, tried to mount the older girls, but apparently he's not man enough for them yet.

Ben, yeah, I'm sure he's going to be quite the stud. We still need to decide which rooster to keep though, Taneli seems like a nice enough fellow, but if we get rid of Eemeli, his sister is going to be all lonely, because he's her support net. Topi is a little s**t though, so he's going to be barbecued for sure.

Are you going into some sort of rain season? How cold does it get there at worst during the winter? We are in the middle of summer here, and there were pictures of people skiing in the news yesterday. We're having really freaky weather, it was almost +30 a month ago, and now it's dipping down to +2 and snowing at some places, we only got hail yesterday. And summer solstice is supposed to be celebrated in the weekend. That's pretty much the biggest event of the year when it comes to Finnish holidays, everyone goes to their summer cottage, eats tons of food, gets wasted and lights a bonfire the size of a house, and then drowns at 3 am when they think "Hey, I need to go fishing right now! And life vests are for losers. Of course I can pee standing up in this children's kayak". But now it will be ruined because it will be cold and raining everywhere. Of course people will get just as drunk, they just won't have as much fun.

Hahaha, our summers sounds kinda the same!

Down where we live, we don't get a wet and dry season (as they do up in the north) but we do get a winter and summer. IN the north, dry season is in winter and wet in summer while both are quite warm.

Down here winter on average gets to a low of about 0C, occasionally dips below but not all that often really. We hear all about it if someone finds ice on their windscreen hahahaha. Has snowed a few times in the hills, but most places in the world would laugh pretty hard at it. Winter highs can be clear and in the 20'sC.

We very rarely get tornado's, and they are so small they are just babies. A few fences and a couple of roof's and they are done. We do have some pretty big storms though, and the hail that comes with it has done a fair amount of damage in the past.

In summer, people start talking about heat waves when it's 40+ for a few days straight, it's not uncommon to have a fair few days over 45C in summer. We often have water restrictions as we consume more than can be pulled from bores or falls from the sky. Desalination is still in the works here too.

Still no chicks out, just a tiny beak poking out a zip hole, still nothing at all from the BLRW, I am growing concerned about it as I normally stare long enough to see some sign of life but not this time, not since Day 18 anyway.
