Our introduction to keeping chickens, the high's, the lows and pics of our journey.

Just a peek.

All 7 (shipped eggs!!!) have hatched. I didn't give her the really scrambled ones, but I'm still amazed.

YEAH! Need more pics though... lol
I wonder if I had not made Coco break her broodiness if more would have hatched under her. BUT she was such a forgetful mom last year that I still ended up having to finish raising her chicks. She's a great setter, but really an idiot in the mom with chicks dept. LOL

Haha - I was trying to not show too much of Betty! It's hard to get pics when they're under her. You have to remember back when I told you all about Ugly Betty...the most loved hen by all the roosters (4 at the time, the two rough ones are now gone). She's one scary mama!

yeah i kno the desk is full of a mess... but it is in the toy room... and coffee spoons are key to toy room sanity
I really don't say 'darn tootin' very often, but that is the most darn tootin cute little fuzz but I have seen! What a gem.
i was told that egg color is male dom. A blue egg roo is needed to make your easter eggs, Crossed with marans will get you olive
Thanks mate, I have two of the blue roo's, but no Maran's :( the darkest brown we have will be the BV. We could buy French Wheaton Marans or Welsommers locally, but it would be a year behind our little 'program'
Big thanks
Nova - I'm sure they'll grow some - lol. If they were SF I'd think it was those short leg genes they have - like dorkings. I never notice that because they're walking around in a couple inches of pine shavings.
I've done so much reading on sexlinks. Here's one
http://www.small-farm-permaculture-and-sustainable-living.com/black_sex_link_chickens.html

There are better ones too with charts of combinations ... will find it...
Even more big thanks, some reading to keep me busy in the morning (yes, currently 2:30am here, just finished driving a few ladies home after Alicia had some friends over for drinks tonight)

Just a peek.

All 7 (shipped eggs!!!) have hatched. I didn't give her the really scrambled ones, but I'm still amazed.
Such a tease lol

Bed time, then tomorrow I will expand my brain some more about sex links and dominant genes. I can honestly say, I never thought I would use those words together a year ago!

I like that design, I might have a hunt about here and see what I can scratch up on the cheap. I was laying in bed this morning designing our rooster box, and how to open the door in the morning. I found a video last night of an aussie design that used water transfer as a counter weight, with the pump on a timer. Not the most attractive looking thing but certainly did the job.

I love using existing tech in a new way.

Now....to go back to those other links and hurt my brain some!
