Our introduction to keeping chickens, the high's, the lows and pics of our journey.

Mama left 1 out a while ago, so we brought it in the house to thebrooder box. We left for dinner. Came home and found her in her nest with 4, the other 4 outside huddled together. DH gathered them and added them to the brooder, too. The box is getting full. Lol.

Ours is enclosed and heated/ac, As for bedding for the brooder not sure, was thinking of wood chips but that is hardware cloth on the bottom and may defeat using the sand under it. I posted pics on a couple other threads and was informed that chicks can get through the holes in chicken wire so I am going to have to modify it.

Had the same problem with my 2x4 brooder. Very simple easy fix. Go to the grocery store and get a few peices of posterboard. Cut it in 6 in strips, and tack along the bottom of the brooder. The chicks can't get out, and they are not smart enough to figure out how to get back in. Lost several chicks this way. That posterboard boarder along the bottom until they are too big to fit through that chicken wire did the trick. AND since it's tacked on, it's easy to take off and replace when its time for a fresh round of chicks. Another thing to try, a roll of screen instead of chicken wire. This'll also have the added benefit of keeping flies out of the brooder if you open the garage door. I have chickens that live in my garage nearly full time. Sometimes, broodies are in to hatch in peace, sometimes hospital for serial killer survivors, (she's mending really well btw) and for the silkies and Pat the Rat who can't live with the LF birds.
Slightly bug-eyed right now. 1 year ago this week, I began with 14 hens, given freely. As of this morning, with finding my free range broody out walking 7 beautiful babies, I currently have 49 hens, roos, and chicks. In the incubator, I have 1 hatched, 2 pipped, and 13 others, having culled 2 quitters yesterday. If the rest all hatch out, we will have a total of 65 birds. O M G.
65? Pfff. That ain't nuttin.
Wow, that is some population growth!

Please pass on my congratulations to your broody mum!

BTW, I just saw this video. Many probably have seen it before. It was new to me, and I very much laughed.

The dangers of Backyard Chickens - The Gateway Livestock.
This still cracks me up. I posted it on my FB page a few weeks ago. My friend says it sounds just like me, except my birds are more colorful.

If mama is having to get her chicks up and down a ramp, you're going to have to put the chicks that haven't figured it out yet up with her. She's not abandoning them really, she just can't get them up the ramp. Getting down is easier, getting up, not so easy. It'll take a less time than you think. I always help my mama's with their chickes getting up until they've figured it out themselves. That's why I put a alot of broodies into the garage broody areas. Even have a broody coop that is just an old converted dog coop with a good door and lock. Well, had. It's now the phoenix coop. BUT anyway, give mama her chicks back. She'll do much better raising them than you can. Not kidding. I have a lot of experience in that department. My mama raised birds are much healthier and more robust faster than brooder babies.
yeah... those boxes sure don't last long for growing chicks lol.

I thought I saw that vid on your FB, but I did not see it when I went back. A friend sent it to us asking if it sounded about right.

We laughed, sounds exactly right, except we had those aspirations of some space and a few animals before we got hooked on the gateway livestock.

Raining and miserable here......still no egg. I am now thinking she is laying completely clear eggs, and they are everywhere but I just can't see them (not srs, I am not that crazy lol)

You've got some face eggs or golf balls in the nest boxes right?

I just did an exam on my raccoon attack victim. I was so excited I had to take her over to the neighbor, who came to my assistance and helped me get her slathered up, to show them who well she is doing. Skin COMPLETELY covers the wounds now! YES! Nice and fresh and pink. Her scabs are falling off as well over the minor wounds. There are a few pin feathers in the back where she lost feathers but not skin. Where the skin is new, it is thin. I will keep her safe for another week. I am SOOOOOO happy though.

I know you have been busy Oz. Thanks for stopping by.

Nova, we have had two fake eggs and one white golf ball in the three open next boxes for a couple of weeks now. If really must be any day now. Luna had big red wattles, comb is noticeably bigger, wide horizontal body shape, wing spread squat and vocal, oh so vocal with a long low sound she makes.

Sunny also has a deepening red in her wattles but no squat from her yet. Rosie and Cleo are not red yet, still a light pink and small, even thought their body shape looks about right.

Those 4 are 19 weeks old now. I think the LS and RIR will push it out to around 22-24 weeks but Luna has looked ready for a while now...agonising wait lol.

I am excited about that too, should not be too long after that the other 6 girls should be up and going too! Then we should be looking at our next hatch (with some French Wheaton Maran's and Blue 'Lorp's added in)

I just did the math on that....should be close to about 60 eggs a week at full tilt. As Steve would say "CRIKEY!" Should be able to keep the neighbors and family well stocked.

I guess part of the anxious wait is that we have only ever had one layer. She would give us one egg most days. The thought of getting back to that stage after all we have been through is just so exciting. I think once one is going I will be more patient hahahaha.

Fodder is looking well, got batch 3 about ready to spread (we are trying to work a batch system where one is ready, the next is not far behind so we should always have some only a day away from ready.
