Our introduction to keeping chickens, the high's, the lows and pics of our journey.

Cool thanks Pam, I will have to go fold out Luna's and have a look. I was pretty sure our's was all black, she did have some white down as a chick though.

Fingers crossed for some slightly different colours other than jet black!

Finally, just as predicted, Alicia falling in love with a Fav chick :D She just melted! Also of note, little chick wing feathers are coming in, looking forward to seeing some nice light colours on those wings! Also noticed that the BA crosses have white wing feathers coming in....interested to see how they pan out.
You're wife looks soooooo happy with that fuzzy faced gremlin! LOL. They are indeed irresistable. Wait till they get their big girl faces. LOL Nice thing, you'll know at about 2-3 weeks for sure which are boys and which are girls. Yes Wright, I still am happy with the piglet waterer. No, it hasn't fallen off, hasn't knocked off either. It's nice because when you have limited space... don't want to take up a foot and a half of space on a waterer in a "stuck in coop" position... it's perfect. I have it right now in the phoenix run, since it's small, and their run is at the moment WAY to small for the three of them, but they are going to be moving soon to their winter quarters... I'll go there too. NO LEAKS! I must say it's not so good with small birds.. you know the ones whose feet are connected to the belly? ex... seremas and short legged japs.... LOL. They can't reach. LOL.

Ben, I'm doing some reading on it so I'll share what I find. Right now I'm looking into the Co gene that single-laced BV carry to see of it stops color from emerging in the breast and body feathers or if it only stops black (lol, on black bird). I'm thinking you may see gold come out in their necks though. Saw a pic of a BA x BV (double laced though) and it was black but developed a little lacing in the wings. Oh, by the way, both my BA's had/have white tips hidden within their wings. They're only visible as adults when you spread the wings.

I am so sad... You guys start talking the gene thing... and I zone.... LOL It'll be important one day I am sure. Like when I start messing with the phoenix... but in the mean time... I zone... LOL

Just went and bought one - 5 minute install in the rooster coop - yay! Looks good so far.
Sorry Nova - will try to not send ya into the zone again, lol. I like reading about the genetics then seeing the "why" in my flock. Thanks for the update on the waterer. I think it's going to be perfect for what I needed.

Haha - Alicia is gonna fall hard for the favs. I just know it :)

Had my first to fall losses today...

Ray the Silkie Roo, and Fritz the Jerk... Found Ray... hawk... Didn't find anything of Fritz. I am hoping he is hiding out. BUT we are having the crap shoot for weather right now, pretty nasty out there. Hope he is hiding good, but... I have seen hawks take chicks that are bigger than Fritz... Little one pound chicken...

Sorry to hear about the boy's. Fingers crossed Fritz make an appearance.

I had a similar fear when I walked into the run today, brown feathers blowing around inside the coop. Clearly Rosie's, but Rosie was walking around happy and healthy. All the feathers looked to be down, picked her up and found they are missing from her tummy/chest area. I am thinking she has some little voices in her head requesting she pluck them herself. Would explain why she is on the nest so long the past couple of days. We might have our first broody soon.

Other than that, I have been training up the MIL for kids and chicken duties. She is kindly looking after everyone while Alicia and I skip down for a few days to go to a wedding in Brisbane (I know...wedding everywhere recently!)

Will see if I can get some wing pics soon, those feathers seem to be sprouting so fast!
