Our introduction to keeping chickens, the high's, the lows and pics of our journey.

Yeah that guy in the second pic was growling at me for disturbing him in the chicken pen. We have them here all the time. Nasty beasties. They supposedly are nocturnal - they don't see well in daylight, but it's not uncommon to see them during the day, sort of like raccoons. I have a secure nighttime coop where my birds are locked up but they are vulnerable from climbers during the day. Reading up on the barbed wire - doesn't look like it will help. Maybe I'll look into a solar electric wire.

Eek! hahahaha, I know our ring tails can get nasty if they are disturbed, but generally they seem pretty harmless. US version seems like some evil zombie cross breed!

I slept on a possum blanket on my honeymoon, honestly I think it is the softest natural fibre I have ever touched.

Last night I placed a new add for the cockerels we have left, and also another add for our spare cross breeds. Seemed I was texting all day answering questions. Most seemed interested in the breeds I am not selling hahahaha. These birds I have on hold that I often talk about are in high demand, I now have two people waiting if those sales fall though for the Maran and Welsummer.

Sold one cross breed today, and someone is coming for an Australorp and a cross breed tomorrow morning.....but the noisy boys are still here for now!

I wish I had your luck getting rid of extra roos! I found homes for two of the nicest ones so I consider that a success.
I thought I saw some black - Sav is definitely darkening up, except his head lol.

I am wanting some Favs. At least I think I do. Pros and cons? Good layers?

Pros: Excellent winter layers, very cold hardy ( Not sure if that's critical for you in North Carolina, lol), absolutely the friendliest chickens I've ever had, very timid - even the roosters.
cons: wish I had more, they demand interaction... they expect it, eggs are more of a medium size (at least mine have been, I've heard others are large).
If Nova sees your post, she should have some good input. She has more experience with the breed than I do.

It has been this year! LOL Normally we average mostly teens-30's through out the winter....
