I'm still in shock! I'm 27 years old and have wanted chickens since I was in middle school! I've been a member of BYC since 2011 and I've been obsessed with reading anything I could on this site to prepare myself for our "someday" chickens. I still thought we were a ways off from owning chickens, but after all those years of planning, dreaming, hoping for some has FINALLY become a reality! WE GOT OUR FIRST BABIES!!!! I'm to the moon and back excited! I won't lie, still in panic mode a little bit because now I actually have to put all the information I learned to use! AHHHHHH! LOL!

I always thought that when I got my first batch of chicks, that I'd go big by getting at least 20 of an assortment of breeds, but instead, we decided that it would be a lot of fun for our 3 year old daughter to experience raising chickens on a smaller scale, so we got just enough to make a small tractor coop and we couldn't be more thrilled!

So here they are - meet Johnny, Cooper and Buttercup - all Black Australorp pullets - named by our daughter :)

Congratulations on your new chicks! They are adorable! Australorps are a great breed, love the names your daughter gave the chicks.

Thank you so much! We were laughing pretty hard when she was trying to figure out their names! Three year olds come up with the most hilarious stuff!

I will second that Australorps are a fantastic breed. You should get some Easter Eggers next! They'll make a lovely flock, and you'll have gorgeous brown and blue eggs. :D

Oh my gosh, you have SO read my mind! We actually weren't planning on starting our flock this soon....I was thinking we weren't going to get chickens until we got our own place/property - we just recently moved back to our hometown after 8 years of living in Spokane, WA and currently live with my parents to get back on our feet and what not - and I have always planned on my someday flock for my "rainbow pack" but these little ladies are honestly a fun little project/pets for our three year old. I'm VERY excited to get her started and let's face it, I'm even MORE excited that I'm owning chickens WAY sooner than I thought I would get too!!

I have a dear friend that has had nothing but Australorps and she just RAVES about them as layers and having great temperaments all the time. They've always been on my list for sure! I'm very happy to start out with that breed! :)
