We're new mini-farm owners and new chicken parents to 3 hens we have called Marsha, Jan & Cindy! We got our chickens last Thursday and last evening we allowed them out 1 hour before dark last night. They went into the coop on their own (a converted horse stall) at 8pm on the dot. Sweet!!!!

Today is their first day out in the run. I opened the compost bin and let them at it...fun for all!!! Closed it up after a couple of hours b/c all they wanted to do was hang out in there and I wanted them to explore more of the run. They seem very happy and were roosting on cinder blocks...so they must be relaxed. I looked out and didn't see them so went down to check...they were in the coop roosting. Happy these youngens are figuring it all out! So fun having these ladies!

Goats & honey bees next!

We originally wanted the hens to be able to free range around our entire property (4.5 acres all fenced) but currently have them separated in a big run area down by our barn to keep them safe from our 2 dogs until they can be "trained" or at least get used to them being around. I'm happy to report that today being the first day the hens had "free range" in their area, the dogs did pretty good. Interested and sitting by the fence but not harassing them and not staying down there all day either. I'm training them, but I'm proud for how they have reacted thus far being the first day and all. We've decided just to keep the hens where they are. It's PLENTY big enough for partial free ranging and less worry about a run in w/ the dogs. We are all learning.

PS First time I've heard of a hen called Marsha. I have a cousin Marsha. I'm sure she would love to know a chicken had the same name. Not!!
