Well Oregano a little over a week ago decided to start acting like she was going broody and fully committed about 6 days ago. Now, we didn't have hatching eggs so I panic ordered some.
But since it could take a week for them to even get here due to the holidays if they were even sent yesterday, I wanted to try throwing a few in the incubator! We'd been collecting eggs as hubby had to be putting them up at night (I busted my knee) and forgot to see if she was still on the nesting box at night. So I was able to leave a couple under her about 3 days ago. We tried to move her + her nesting box into the mini-coop for some alone time. That DEFINITELY was not okay with her (understandable- I know it's tough to move the spots on a broody) so we brought her and the eggs back in. She swapped nests but we put the marked eggs back under her! I brought one of the marked ones we'd missed in the next morning (poor, abandoned egg) and a handful of non-marked ones that had been sitting out for a day or two room temp, and chucked them in the incubator (in case she ended up sitting on duds). The marked egg was a couple days ahead of the others (time-sat-on-wise) and lo and behold! This morning I did a quick candle to be sure none had hairline cracks, and it's developing! Our first from-home baby!
Certainly not sure if it'll make it to hatching, as we've got no idea who laid what and have all ages of layers, but fingers crossed that we can get Oregano at least one baby! So very excited! We'll do a full candling on Christmas day to see how many we've got growing, if any others.
