Our Pretty Quail!

Oh I love them! What breed are they? Egg color?
They are Northern bobwhite quail and their egg color is white. I have been raising them for a couple of years now. We actually got them by participating in an embryology program by borrowing and incubating quail eggs and then giving the hatched ones back, but only one hatched and we were allowed to keep her, so we did! She was lonely so we got more eggs but only two hatched in our next clutch that we ordered and they were males! One female and two males, there was no way we could do that because the males would fight over the female. So, we had to get more, eventually, and we ended up with a small covey all because of an incident! I am glad you like them! Your quail are so beautiful! :love Thank you for sharing them!

A wonderful story! I may have to add them to my list! From your experience, do they have good temperaments? Egg laying? Are they for meat as well? They look so different...are they autosexing?

Our quails do, but bob's tend to be a little more "wild". We hand raised 3 of them and then we hatched out another 24 and picked the most docile ones out of that bunch and handled them as often as we could. So our group of 13 is pretty good for bob's...some let us pick them up, others do not but they all will eat fairly well from our hands, don't seem to flush too much and tolerate us in their pens without too much fuss.

The ladies lay about every other day. We don't eat them, they're pets here, but I know others that do and like them. Sexing them is tough, you really can't know until they start developing different colored heads at about 3 months, so it's hard to plan your flock!

Thank you so much for sharing that with me!
