Our puppy does the sweetest thing!

That's cute!

Well, you know, be prepared and all that.

Her contract reads" In the event of failure of the Original Dog, the Emergency Backup Dog will fulfill all duties of the Original Dog including, but not limited to- barking at intruders, digging up stuff, chasing bunnies, barking at the neighbor's cows, chasing the kitties, barking at invisible things and eating all thing yucky."
So far she is doing well with her training. I have every confindence that should there be a complete system failure of the Original Dog the EBD will happily step in to take care of matters.

Sorry for the hijack...

Grit- I think your second puppy will be his "special friend" and not his sister. We frown on such things in TN as well.

Awww, that's so sweet! Now, there's the difference between dogs and cats for you.

This reminds me of when we lost our most precious pet several years ago. We brought home his body from the vet's office and laid in his bed so that our other little dog, his long-time companion, could see it. Somehow we felt she needed to see that he was dead. (Silly, I guess). Anyway, she ran and got his favorite toy and presented it to him. I'll never forget that. She was depressed for quite a while after that, she missed him so much.

Well I'm boasting, but I think Jax is the world's smartest puppy. He knows all his commands in english and german. Today I'm going to teach him how to put all his toys up before he goes to his crate for the night.
Right now he's trying to figure out how to open the puppy gate so he can get in where the "kitty crunchies" (litterbox) are kept.

Actually it's not silly. There is proof that animals grieve too. Just as much as we humans need to process what has happened, animals do to.

There's one story of a dog who lost his mate and he sat under the living room table until he died. The owners knew the mate was sick and had taken her in to be put to sleep. So all he knew was his mate left one day and never came back and he fell into a deep depression.

There's documentation of elephants touching and picking up elephant bones and crying and wailing and being in a depressed state for a number of days.

I lost a dog and we showed her best buddy, a friend of mine dog, so he could process it...he thought she was stinky and wanted to roll on her though...she was found in a culvert...stuck in the hottest part of summer. She went after some coons and couldn't get out. I looked all over for her when I got home from work that night and never found her. My mom had let her out but didn't expect her to wander away. The police came to my door days later and said they had found her.

When one of my ferrets died, I showed him to his mates, and they tried to bite him in his neck to rouse him. It was so sad.

...I think your story is endearing. And I never think it silly to let our animal companions experience their loss...or else how confusing life would be.

and half way unrelated story:

My mom's friends have a dog...well, had 2 dogs that had one of those tandem collars where they can walk the dogs together. One of the dogs was older and died recently. The dog that is left now has more pep and life to him now that the older dog isn't keeping him going at a slower speed on the leash.

Just goes to show you never know how animals will respond.

and gritsar... that's why my litter box is at the bottom of the basement stairs and there is a gate that doggies can't get through at the top. They are exposed stairs you might say, it has a rail all around them so the cats can squeeze through the bars at the top and make their way down to the basement.

There is an elephant at The Elephant Sanctuary who spent most of her life in a concrete enclosure at a zoo. Her only "toy" was an old tire. When she moved to the sanctuary she brought the tire with her and it is her most prized possession. She carries it everywhere she goes and is never without it.
There was another elephant at the sanctuary that befriended the tire elephant. They were inseperable and roamed the hills together. Suddenly the second elephant fell ill and died. The caregivers at the sanctuary are very careful to allow the others a chance to grieve in whatever form they wish. They held a burial for the lost elephant and then left the site alone. The next morning the tire had been carefully placed on the grave. It was so incredibly sweet. She left her tire there for three days and then retrieved it.
