You should, particularly since you are able to create the CAD drawings yourself and not pay to hire another professional! There are many unique ideas in your coop (the large clean out doors are my favorite) that I really hadn't seen prior to yours. And for an individual who may not have the good fortune of a talented builder or draftsperson in their family to work with off of a simple picture, plans are a must!

Best of luck to you and your gals.

That looks GREAT!!! I love the way it matches your house. My house is a cream-yellow so I painted the chicken house the closest to the same color as I could. You did a real good job. And I love the sun.

I am more than handicapped when it comes to building.......and the other half.well......lets just say...he is NOT allowed to build anything............ my coop is the poor mans version.completly okiefied....homemade,freecycle coop.... I used all my old rusted out cast iron items to decorate...........and planted flowers to grown up the wires....... I must say, even though it is a sad little thing......when the flowers bloom and my chickens are happy, I love it anyway ENJOY IT I know your chickens will

Hi 5 Peeps,

The run area is all sand - play sand or all purpose sand, which ever is on sale at the moment. The girls do a good job at mixing it all in with the dirt and uncovering any rocks I missed. (they dig to China sometimes!

) So, I never need to change it.

I do have to add in more sand when they have dug up more dirt to mix in. Only because it gets muddy then. When it is mostly sand it drains well and doesn't get all muddy.

I go in there weekly or every other week in the summer and rake it up into piles and sift them thru a big kitty litter scoop to clean out the poop. Then I just throw down some Sweet PDZ or Stall dry which neutrilizes any smell.

I hope that answers your question

Nearly a year later, and your fabulous coop is still inspiring! I've been trying to find a coop that meshes my ideas with my husband's notions and yours seems to fit the bill quite well. Thanks for sharing. I'm sure my ten babies (who I don't even get until mid-June) will thank you, too.
