I know this sounds crazy, but last year we were messing around with my husbands jake call and our new BBW poults. When we used the call we noticed one poult ran to a corner and layed down and the other didn't care. Well those turkeys grew to be 1 hen and 1 tom. We got 4 more poults 3 weeks apart last May and June, again we used the jake call and again with each brooder 1 layed down and 1 didn't care. Right now outside we have 2 toms and 2 hens. So far the jake call has shown very early on the sexes of the poults. Right now we have 8 BBB poults in the brooder and I just remembered about the jake call again and sure enough 2 poults ran to a wall and layed down and the 5 didn't care and 1 wasn't sure,it would lay down then get up then lay down. I am willing to say we will end up with 5 toms and 3 hens. Only time will tell but I thought it was interesting on how it has worked out.

The ones that lay down are the females, submissive to the males call? Yes it is a gobble, it is called a jake call. It is just an experiment so far. I think it will be interesting to see if it is right again this spring. I thought by posting it will be a good way of keeping track of the poults and their sexes. I also plan on hatching a few poults from my 2 pairs also, so I want to try it with them also.

Vicki my husband always wanted to try turkey hunting, so he has a few calls. We started it as a ha ha we can talk turkey to them and just happened onto this. So far it has been right on.
