I really would not recommend a rooster until your flock is laying. I have had good luck with predator control with a good rooster, but not all roosters are equal, and there is a limit to what they can do.
I too agree, it is more than likely a predator and if it is THEY WILL BE BACK!!! You may have to rethink the free-ranging set up.
