Well, I have to say I'm glad I'm not the only one that has no luck with straight run.

First time I got chicks we bought 12. Out of the 12 we had 1 hen.

I kid you not. Then we bought some older hens and that of course was easy. We bought another straight run of chicks 8 this time and had only 2 hens

We bought some runner ducks several months ago and now we can tell what we have. We bought 6 straight run and guess what........ we only have 2 girls

So yes, I am happy to see we aren't the only ones that get to many males. Sorry but I don't believe it's a 50/50 split.

This Sat. we are going into lock down. I am so hoping for more females then males!

We did the same thing had them posted on the farm and garden section of craigslist and nothing for over a month so I got desperate and posted them on the free ads...our bantie roo started crowing LOUDLY and guess what 4 hours later all 3 roos were on their way to a great home as pets on 20 acres and the girl said she'd take any other roos that we may have ended up with

I guess it's nice to hear we aren't the only people to have such bad luck with straight-run chicks. We are going to get our next batch of hens from a farm near us I think. We know which rooster to keep, but I am so afraid they will end up fighting. I know that would be a worst case scenario, and the odds are slim, but we held them as babies.... I would rather eat them than know they're being fought, but can't find any place that processes around here. TOTALLY NOT ready to process them ourselves!!!

BUT until you get rid of them, however you do it, I'd put them in a pen & leave em there, and let my girls free range or whatever it is you do with the roo's right now.

That way the roo's are already in a pen & that eliminates the having to round them all up & them being aggresive towards you at night.!

Check out the "Where are you?" section of the forum, you may find other BYCers in your area, and hopefully there will be someone who wants your roos for their yard or their table. Your dilemma is a common one every chicken keeper should plan for, even if they buy sexed chicks from a hatchery. You must have a Plan B for any/all unwanted roosters.
