out of chicken feed...

I'm picking it up this afternoon but gave the girls oatmeal with peanut butter and buttermilk yesterday, the same this morning (with veggie scraps mixed in) plus they're doing some free-range foraging (albeit in a frozen yard). Plus some scratch...what do you do feed them if you run out of feed? This is the first time it's happened -- our feed store has odd holiday hours that I hadn't taken into account, and is the opposite direction from my job, plus this is our first winter with chickens and their extra food intake snuck up on me...living and learning...

I recommend picking up a spare bag while you are there...I have one in house and one in trunk of car I need to go get out!

Yup...in the fall thru spring we always make sure we have one extra bag of layer pellets etc. We dont get it often, but when we do get bad weather we are stuck. Last year we couldnt get out of the house for over 2 weeks cos of the snow and ice!

I am really nervous about that tho...Once Sept runs around I am stocking up on canned goods and dry goods, animal food and firewood. I hated to not be able to go out the last few times we were stuck. A few years back we had no power for almost 2 weeks in temps with the high at 30 degrees

We lived with the wood stove going. At least we had stuff we could cook...and bbq etc...thank goodness we didnt really need to worry about the food in the freezer lol We ended up putting it all in the garage to make sure it stayed frozen. And last year, we got a ton of snow. We couldnt get off our street cos of the snow and ice....it probably isnt a lot to people in big snow country, but here it was a nightmare. Over 2.5 feet of snow, and we usually only get maybe 2 inches if that. Our run collapsed under al the snow

At least the pen itself was ok..slightly bent due to the weight but I am surprised it didnt give way completely. Just the deer netting stretched (didnt break amazingly) and it bent the metal poles of the dog run we use.

So ya I get paranoid lol and stock up on everyone in Sept. I plan for the worst, cos you never know...and I dont play around when the weather is bad. Last thing I want is for my husband to try to get out of the house to get something....I worry too much.

Extra people food and neccessities ? Check!
Extra cat litter and cat food? Check!
Firewood etc? Check!
Extra birdie food and BOSS etc? Check!
