So it has turned hot here in sunny va already and im thinking that it would be a nice break to take my week old chicks outside in the grass. Just for a little play time in the nice weather. I will build a little chicken wire pen to keep them safe, and wont leave them unattended....this should be ok, eh? Have 6 new chicks that i picked up from the southern states store last week. 2 golden comets, 2 barred rock, and 2 RIR. All hens. Our first go with chickens...what a great site this is!! Next......to build the coop!!

congrats on the new chicks! I'm sure you will have a great experience! I think they would love to go outside and hang out, just make sure you keep an eye on them and make sure they are comfortable and safe

Mine are kept outside from day 1. Disclaimer: I live in the low desert so I can get away with this when others cannot. Just make sure whatever enclosure they are in is still predator proof, not too drafty, and has a place where you can easily hang a brooder light...if it's a permanent brooder for them. If you are going to watch them while they are outside, then you can use a pretty simple set-up.
