Over build, over budget, build

We used scrap to make a shelter for the feeder and waters.

It keeps the feeder dry and keeps the water shaded and cooler.

Yeah I am going to see if I want to go to a 15 gallon barrel for water or keep the 5 gallon bucket. Then I will make a cover and stand for it as I don't like the 4 cinder blocks its on now lol. I got a good amount of scrap and will have more after I build a fence.

I just had to do something fast to get them something that would last them more than half a day.... filling a 1 quart water can 2 or more times a day was getting to be a pain. I know I could have gotten bigger ones but I hate the idea of buying something I will only use a few times.

I can't carry a 5 gallon bucket so I have to use 3 gallon buckets. I like to make sure I have enough to last them at least 2, preferably 3 days -- just in case.

I live in northern CA
Ah, that makes sense then.

Here's how to your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, and then it's always there!

I made it so I dont have to carry any buckets just full it with the hose when it gets low. There is a valve at the bottom of the bucket so I can turn it off takenit all apart and clean it when it gets dirty.

Does any one know would adding a few drops of bleach be ok for the chickens? Basicaly the same as when the issue a boil water order or something like that? Helping keep the system cleaner. Looks like they recommend 1/3 tea spoon for 5 gallons.

Yes, chlorinating your water won't kill your chickens. Keep it reasonable. and doseage actually depends on the strength of your bleach.

I don't bother.

Adding bleach is a bit different than boiling. ;)
Is that common where you are?

Are you worried about bacteria or algae?
Not sure I'd bother either, but my water is in the coop and always shaded.
I only clean it twice a year.

Do you have a vacuum release hole in your bucket?

Lets say you drive down to your local Marval Market, and buy a 121oz bottle (on special) of "Best Yet" bleach, at $5.49. You read the label. If its 7.5% Sodium Hypochlorite (I don't know, its not visible on the label, and the MFG doesn't say on their website), you put that number into this calculator, tell it how much water you want to make, and how you want to measure that water.

EPA says drinking water is fine up to 4 ppm (parts per million). A swimming pool is usually between 1ppm and 3ppm.

At 7.5%, 3 DROPS of bleach to 1 gal of water gives the desired 3ppm

Easy.
