Overheated or something else?

Yes, if you can get her back into the coop today for recuperation, all the while in the flock, she will fit right back into the flock when she is better.

As for how long it takes, depends on how badly she sprained it. This could take a few days to a few weeks. You might do an exam on her to make sure she did not dislocate her hip. Her hip area of the side she can't stand on should feel just like the side she can stand on. Run your hands down her thighs up high and both sides should feel the same. If you hold her and lightly pull and move her leg around, she shouldn't be in horrible pain. But don't force her to walk until she is ready.

Since you don't have any baby asprin, you can take a regular asprin, 325mg, (with nothing else in it) and put it in a baggie. Take a hammer to it and crush it. Carefully divided it up into 8 portions. You can give her 1 of these portions in a raisin this morning. (this will be a very tiny amount of powder.) You can give her another 1 of these portions tonight at roosting time.

Keep us posted and let us know how she is today.

She is fine this morning. I filled her scratch and mealworms and water- she has them in dixie cups. When I came back 5 minutes later she was standing up!

But after about 10 seconds she sat back down again. I think she is getting better. But how do I prevent the other chickens from going in her box when I put her back? I don't want to overheat her in such a tiny space. Should I put her in a nest box or something? Thanks for all your help!!

Great that she can do some standing!!!! That means we should be able to get her healed.

You will have to use your imagination and see if you can keep her contained an the others out of her area. Do you have any puppy gates, dog crates or anything like this? Just something not only to keep others out, but her in a small area. You really need to keep her from getting up and moving around for a few days. I wouldn't keep her in the nest box if it is hot outside. And if it is really warm in your coop, get some fans running, sprinkle water around, put ice in the water fonts, feel cold treats, what ever it takes to keep them cool. Fans really do help. Even if they are just blowing hot air around, at least the air is moving. Get the fan blowing on the birds.

But you need to keep her from reinjuring this leg. So keep her contained in something. Get creative and make something. Just make sure she can't get hurt on what ever you use.

Keep us posted! Hopefully in a couple days she can rejoin the flock!

Freeze gallon jugs of water and set one behind fan and scattered around coop/run. Refreeze as the ice melts.

Hi! I am not sure from my quick reading, but if you haven't seen her drink anything, she may be dehydrated. I'd get some water or electrolytes/water into her as well. Hope she is doing better today!

Yes, she has been drinking and eating fine.
Today she is the same as yesterday- stands up once in a while and then sits back down. I moved her box to the run of our chicken coop. She has scratch, layer pellets, mealworms, and water. I also changed the bedding for her. She seems to be happy right now. Thank you all and I hope she gets better soon!

Today I took Hershey out of her pen in the run to mist her with the hose. When I did, she started crawling a few feet on the grass. Is this this normal, or has she hurt herself worse?

She is still standing up every now and then in the run.

* Update for people reading this thread *
She still isn't able to walk but is getting better. I gave her some hard boiled egg and crushed almonds for vitamins. I am limiting her movement for a while.
