Hi everyone, I have six week old chickens that I just moved into their new coop. I am so overwhelmed by so much information on how to take care of my new girls. Any encouragement is welcomed for this first timer owner.

I have three Cuckoo Marans and three Easter Eggers. They are so full of personality and I just enjoy watching them. I live in Louisiana so I worry about them in the heat. I am having trouble getting them to roost at night.

:welcome Hello! Welcome to BYC! There's a lot to be overwhelmed by when it comes to getting your first chickens, but don't worry! It's not as difficult as it seems, and you have a whole community of experienced chicken owners to help you at BYC! You've got this!
Also, about the roosting, don't worry. Chickens will learn to roost in time, it's a safety instinct. And unless not roosting puts them in an unsafe area, it's not a problem.

I never thought about that! Thank you!
Welcome! Your chicks are a little young I believe and mine are around 13!weeks. They have just now mastered roosting. I live next to you in MS. I had to keep mine in the house because of the heat extremes up until they were about 9 weeks old and it took until then for them to start perching well and wanting to roost. When I put them in their coop at close to ten weeks it was the third night before they roosted on the roost boards. But they went in on their on to the coop by the second night still laying on the bedding and that was great in itself. If yours learn that at such a young age as far as knowing to go to the coop as a safe place where nothing is supposed to be able to hurt them there then that is the main thing. They will learn to roost before you know it. If you have the roost boards in place they will want to check them out soon enough when they get all their good flying skills in order. Time flies when your having fun. They grow up fast.
