Overwintering Quail....

Hi,

Brand new here. Considering getting some quail for eggs. My main question is two fold. What do people do with the Quail in cold climates? I'm in Maine, so it can sometimes dip down below 0F for brief periods of time. I'm assuming you could put them in a shelter built to put the wire coops in? If I kept it to say 4x8'x12"-16", I could just lug it into a barn for the winter...good idea?

Quail tolerate the cold really well. All they need is plastic sheeting over the coop to block out cold winds, or you could move them into your barn either way just block the draft.

Would a house per say attached to the pen be a nice touch for them to go into when it's really cold, with maybe a light bulb for heat?

Sure just don't make it with a ramp. They're ground birds and you have to "teach" them to use a ramp, which is akin to teaching a tortoise to be a sea turtle. A lot of hassle and no good reason to do it.
