I have a girl who needs her oviduct removed due to build up of impacted pus material but wondering about costs and risks. I have heard chickens don't do well under anesthesia. I am in Canada and would have to go through U of Guelph but its $100 to even get them to see her and I am over an hour away. Shes 5 and in great health otherwise. There is not much time left if I don't do something. She is my favourite hen of course too!

While I have lost several hens to problems like this, I don't have easy access to an avian vet, so have no personal experience with surgery. My guess is that it would be quite expensive, just based on other posts on this forum where people have shared the costs they incurred for various vet visits and treatments. And yes, anesthesia can be risky for birds. At the end of the day it's really up to you and how important it is to you to try to save your hen, what you would consider a reasonable risk, and what you would consider a reasonable expense. I don't think anyone can really answer that but you, and the vet doing the surgery would be the best person to discuss with what the odds of survival would be. Can you speak to someone there and get a general idea of what the total cost might add up to - seems like a reasonable question? It's very hard to have to consider the cost in making these decisions, but most of us don't have unlimited funds, so it unfortunately has to be part of the decision. Either way, I don't think there is a right or wrong decision, it's just what is best for you and your hen when everything is considered. I'm sorry your hen is having these issues, it's not uncommon sadly. I wish you the best whatever you decide.
