I have snow so I knew what it was as soon as I saw paw prints! I ran some fine craft wire through a chicken heart I pulled out of my freezer and wired it to the trap. Worked like a charm!

Do you have pictures of the paw prints? Could you post them?

Ew poor weasel..

We have "least weasels" where i leave but you see them very rare. They usually eat from garbage bins in summer. I think they are cute creatures. I would not kill them but thats just me. I always wanted to capture a badger somehow and keep him as "pet" but thats before i decide that i will keep chickens. Badgers are the most brave animals in the world.

Good for your chickens you killed the cute weasel i hope there is no more wandering around your coop or house. Good luck

Couldn't you have relocated it? I killed a black snake in the coop once with a shovel, and it made me sick for a long time... Now we put them in paper bags and drive them off to the marsh.

I couldn't even begin to think of drowning a living, breathing creature.

Too bad for you and too bad for your chickens. Weasels and most predators eat the birds alive.

There are numerous reasons not to relocate: It's illegal to relocate trapped mammalian predators due to rabies in most states. Why make a problem for some other farmer too? These animals are very territorial and fight to the death when another invades its territory. So moving it means dying anyway. As it was, I would never have been able to remove this critter from the trap while alive, it had its head stuck in the mesh firmly. But despite that, I or my dog, does kill anything that tries feeding on my livestock. Predator control is an unpleasant responsibility but it has to be done or don't have chickens, etc.

Drowning is very quick.

Once you see weasel tracks in the snow you will never mistake them for anything else. Very pretty creatures, pretty cute, pretty vicious, pretty deadly killing machines....
So far our local weasel has not bothered our birds, but cleans the squirrels out of our attic on a regular basis. Only seen it twice in ten years but often see his tracks.
PS I would be amazed if there were NO weasels in Maine.....Try Google for more info
I'd love to have a big Black snake around my coop, they would soon get rid of those mice.
