I cannot figure out the instructions to dose my chickens with Oxytetracycline. One of them died last night, and I do not know why. Her comb was looking rather dry, as I noticed the other day. She stayed by herself the next day and we had to coax her into her coop that evening. When we awoke, she was lying stiff on the floor of the coop. I don't know what was wrong, but was advised to administer Oxytetracycline whenever one of them seemed ill. Can anyone help me figure out what to do? I have 181.5 g or 6.4 oz of Oxy and three chickens. How much Oxy do I add to say, a quart of water???
ANYONE????

You can read this link to double check, but it looks like 1 1/4 tsp per quart or 5 tsp per gallon would deliver the maximum dosage. Give it for 7 days. Sorry that you lost a bird. How old was she? If you should lose another chicken, get a necropsy by your state vet.

Thank you sooooo much!! I was at a loss to figure it out as we didn't have metrics when I was in school!! I do appreciate your answering. The little red hen that died was a Rhode Island Red, three years old - I noticed her comb looked very dry the other day, but got busy and forgot about it. She also lagged behind the others when I called, and I had to go coax her into her coop. Which really isn't that unusual - always seems one is lagging behind, but not her. I feel bad because I didn't do anything after I noticed!! :-( ...But just giving to the others as a preventative, as someone told me to do. Others look fine, act fine. Poor little Brownie!!

You’re welcome. I have learned over the years that laying hens can have many different problems with reproductive disorders, crop problems, intestinal infections, and heart or liver failure. Some chickens can live 10 years or more, but the really good layers or production birds can have shortened lives from reproductive problems. Here is a good link for locating a state vet or poultry lab near you:
