Hello everybody,
I have a sick 12 month old Isa Brown. Her name is Hotwheels. She aint feeling too hot right now. After reading a LOT of posts here, i think she has egg yolk peritonitis . I have read on various threads here that duramycin 10 can help. I am in Australia, the only thing i can find is tetracycline hydrochloride tablets that go in aquariums, and have read elsewhere here that it is ok to use with hens.
But i don't know how much to use.
It says on the bottle the tablets are equivalent to 346mg/kg tetracycline.
Does anybody have an idea how much i should give her in her water?
Sorry, i know this is a repeat topic, but i couldn't find an answer.
I really want to help her
Thank you everybody.
Paula

Sorry, i meant to say also each tablet contains 375mg of tetracycline ...

I found somewhere on the forums that it's good to give 50mg per kg of bodyweight ... i estimated her weight to be maybe 2 kgs???

Anyway, i have cut the tablet into eighths and have dissolved one of those in water and she's drinking that fairly happily. I will continue doing similar until someone might be able to give me some advice.

Thank you, Paula

In the US the oxytetracyline dose when used in water is 800 mg per gallon. Given orally, it's might be as much as 50 mg/kg, but I'm not sure.

Thank you so much for your reply.

She started refusing her water, so i put an eighth of the tablet in some roast pumpkin and got a dose in that way.

I will try do the same again this morning.

I really appreciate your reply.

If she's not drinking water you should consider tubing fluids to her. She needs no less than 5% of her body weight per day in fluids.

Thank you casportpony.
It is since last night that she's decided against drinking. She just had a few sips now, but hardly any.
I am not confident to do the tube feeding. I wish you were here to help her.
I am taking her to the vet today, i think her abdomen needs draining. I'm nervous.
From other advice on the forums i was hoping to at least get her to feel better with the tetracycline, but i understand there's the underlying issue of EYP.
I feel so sad for her. She's been in our laundry /sickbay for 4 days now. Poor little darling.

So sorry for you. :hugs I hope the vet can do something for her. :fl

Aw, thanks !
Vet put her on baytril and said yo keep giing going with the tetracycline and see how she goes until Tuesday. She also gave her some fluids subcutaneously so that should help a little.
There is a specialist hen vet an hours drive away who i can go to cone Tuesday if she's not going well. The New Years traffic along our coastal towns is horrendous today and tomorrow so i couldn't get to specialist today.
I'll let you know how she gets on.
Thanks for your care and interest
