I have three pullets, one our RIR started laying on Sunday, so we started offering oyster shell, free choice. Our other two birds, a BR and Aussie haven't laid yet but they are ALL ABOUT the oyster shell. Is it ok for them to eat it? They are 27 and 25 weeks and they get a grower and layer mix feed (I had too much grower left over to toss it out), they get some kitchen scraps, and they spend the day outside eating bugs, grass etc. They won't eat this stuff like a great an then not eat their feed will they? Thanks.

at that age I think its OK. I'm having the same issue but my pullets are only 20 weeks so what I do is offer it to my laying hen separately and once sometimes twice a day she gobbles it up but I don't leave it out yet because I'm worried mine just turned 20weeks and are a bit young yet. at six months it should be alright but if your worried you can try doing it like I mentioned. hope this helps and best wishes!

I had an egg tonight and my oldest girl is probably only 16-20 weeks old. My youngest is probably only 7 weeks and I've got the other 8 are all 12 weeks old. Problem is my new layer is the least friendly and least tame since we got her already grown so I'm not sure she would eat out of my hand. Her best friend is the youngest and they hardly ever leave the coop because the other girls pick on them when they do. Geeesh

Also one of them ate the egg.
