I'm so old I Remember when:

It took me a long time to get to that point. Getting out of the house and off to college helped a LOT. All the other freshmen were dropped into the same circumstances of being in a new location, among strangers, doing new things, on their own for the first time. They didn't know how uncool I was! :lau

The 3 strikes against me in middle/high school were: I was new, I liked school, and I did well.
I was the same way. When I started high school, my problem wasn't the kids, it was the teachers! My first day, as soon as my homeroom teacher hit my VERY Italian surname on the roster, I was shocked and pleased that she actually pronounced it correctly! She pointedly asked me if I was related to ... and listed off a half dozen of my slightly older cousins. I innocently and enthusiastically volunteered, "Oh yes, they're my cousins!" I can still see her leaning back, crossing her arms, and almost venomously saying, "Oh, you're one of them!"

Word spread quickly, and it was a good six months before they realized that I was a "Good Kid!" The next year, they got my closest cousin - also a good student. Just when they started to breathe more easily, they got the next wild child ... and the family reputation went right back to Square One! It's been decades, and it's still chuckled about at HS reunions!
