Oyster shell deal

I’ve never seen any foreign objects in the bags and I’ve gone through a lot.
They may have fixed the issue, but I know I was not the only one. Several others on here mentioned they had the same problem with those oyster shells. For every 5 bags I bought at least 1 had metal shards and not just one or two shards, the bag had many shards.

I order the 50# bags from TSC online and have them delivered. I can get the bag for $18.99 and I get free shipping. I usually order 2 bags at a time, I go through a lot.

We buy the 50lb. bags of oyster shell at TSC, and have never had any problems, it stores fine in one of our metal garbage cans, and doesn't get old. It's fed in a regular metal feeder, separate from the grit feeder, and from the actual feed.

I will go that route the next time, thanks for the info!

For now though, I really love my cute little buckets. 😊

@StacyT @Folly's place Did you purchase the Manna Pro 50# bag? That is the only one I find that is 50#, It is a mixture of crushed OS and Coral Calcium.
The 100% OS is more expensive.

@Debbie292d the McMurray at Chewy is "Crushed Shell Calcium Carbonate, Oyster Shell, and Calcium"

For all three of you, have you had any trouble with either of these with soft shell, thin shell or any other calcium related deficiency?

Very rarely have I seen an egg issue. This year so far, I can say I had: 1 wrinkled egg and 2 shellless eggs. This would be out of hundreds of eggs, and all were a "one-time" issue. The shellless were with new layers. The wrinkled one I have no clue but it was a fluke. All three weird eggs were back when I was using the Manna Pro, but do not attribute anything to that. I just switched back in April because it was more cost-effective for bulk, and I wanted to have a couple of those little buckets. I saw some posts in here about more affordable bulk products and after I use up this stuff, I'll probably switch them again to something in the big bags.

Here, we've only got Walmart and TSC, and both just stock the small bags of Manna Pro oyster shell, so was off to searching to order something else when I had found the Chewy deal.

Another trick with chewy if someone hasn't mentioned it is to have more than one email account. We had one under my name and one under my husband's name for the same address. I want to say if we went 2-4 months without ordering (I would stock up pet meds to try to make things cheaper) the emails would alternate on the really good discounts, like $20 off $40 or $50 if I recall correctly.

As a side note, if you have freezer space, save all your egg shells, dry them out in the oven and then take a coffee grinder to them. Free calcium with trace minerals for the chickens.

Or save effort and just toss the shells to the chickens without all that fuss. Maybe give them a squish with your hand or step on the shells so they look a bit less like an egg.

If you have young chicks, and you are buying eggs while you wait for your pullets to grow up, then I agree it could make sense to save up the shells for when the pullets are old enough to need them.

I just checked 3 TSC stores in WI: Watertown, Waupun and Hartford and they all carry the 50# Manna Pro from their website.

Thanks for your response. As we might have 10+ pullets that should be laying in about 2 months, I'm thinking of feeding a higher protein, instead of layer and offering the OS/ES. Not sure as up to this time our 17 hens are healthy and great layers with no egg issues. Only troubles began with cicadas and starter feed.

Those TSCs are a couple of hours from here and all in the same general vicinity, toward the Milwaukee end of the state.

I'll just order it to be shipped to the store when the time comes, then we can pick it up at the same time as our other bulk items, such as sunflower seeds, horse bedding pellets, etc.

Not to butt into your business but it's raining and the outside plans have changed (and clothing on the line soaked 😂). I had extra time and thought I would check a few stores in your state. We live in a very rural area and we also plan what we need when we travel into the city.
