oyster shells?

Exactly as Kooshie said. My FIL tells me stories about collecting chicken eggs in a bucket and many of them breaking (before the days of formulated layer feed and oyster shell). I'm sure I could collect a mop bucket of eggs without them breaking because all the calcium available now makes the shells to strong.

Ok, thanks. I thought it was probably for stronger shells. Now my question is - how much do I give them? I have two full size girls and two bantams. They are all old enough to lay. My Ameracauna hasn't started yet, but I'm expecting it any day now. They eat lay crumble, hen scratch and greens. Thanks for your insight.

Offer it free choice in a feeder or a bowl or something. They'll eat it when they need it, hopefully.

My dad used to have whole oyster shells in our driveway...to drive on and the chickens would peck at will. Nice unless you want to walk on your driveway
