So interesting that so many are talking about Oyster shells! I think they have made a great difference in our hens overall health.
As we have given them to the hens in a separate dish, they just love them, and have had not health issues.
Someone told me, that if the hens were low on calcium, that feeding them recycled shells probably wouldn't be enough, so we went to supplementing with extras in a dish.
When the dish is empty and I refill it, the hens run to it and make a bunch of noise! (the bowl is a metal dog watering dish!)
Earlier we had bumble foot-twice and also the prolapsed vent-3 times.
Knock on wood, not one of those problems since adding oyster shells as a FREE CHOICE!
