My hens are used to free ranging but I just moved to a more rural area and I cannot risk it as I have seen several foxes out during the day and I had a raccoon attack a few nights after I moved in. They have an enclosed run but they pace up and down all day.

I feel bad for them but I don't really know what to do. Any suggestions on keeping them busy? Other than food?

I put a ladder in my run they seem to like it.

My run is covered with wood chip, like you get from chipping down trees. Every morning they get scratch, then they get birdseed, which I kick around in the chip. They can spend all day looking for bits of birdseed and scratch. In the afternoon I usually give them a pile of weeds which they dig through for quite a while. Sometimes I put in grass clipping, spread all over the run. So, well it IS all about FOOD, they have to work a little harder at it--wish I could free range!
