Pack of coyotes circling the coop last night...

They do take a night walk every night after dark. DH has seen coyotes on the edge of the property before. Our stupid dog tried to run to them one time and she would have gotten herself killed even though she is big.
Ha shaving cream!!

Hmm one more reason not to let my toddler play outside unattended...

I just don't know. We've had the chickens for a month and had been surprised that nothing had really tested the coop yet. We know there are tons of critters in the area. Coyotes I didn't really thiwould be nice but neither DH nor I have EVER shot one...I'm a decent shot with a rifle thanks to growing up in a hunting family but I don't even know a person who has one... a cross bow that is.

nk would try to eat through a coop to get in at them...

A crossbow What do you do with the bodies if you do tag them?

A really deep hole to put them in.

Just make sure your shot counts. Last thing you need is a Coyotes running around with an arrow stuck in it’s side. You’ll have the bleeding heart news media around your house. Crying there is a cruel animal killer roaming the streets!

Silencer

or this bleeding heart would be crying her eyes out at what she did to the coyote..Seriously it isn't a bad thing to feel bad for wildlife, even when you have to kill them! I would be chasing after it as long as I had to so I could finish the job..Ok unrealistic but still.

Ugh, the thought of not getting a direct hit on the critter is going to forever stop me from using a cross bow!

Yikes. Don't try the spray!
I've heard that you can get a dog to urinate near your run it works. Never tried it though.

My guess is they may even like the taste of the stop chew make them work faster at chewing their way into the coop.

Get a silencer Shoot them!

Have you ever tried that stuff?? Like bitter apple/bitter orange spray? It tastes like chewed up asprin.

I cannot see a coyote liking it.... (Okay so I tech at a vet.. we use it all the time for pets that want to chew out their IV catheter. I got curious and wanted to see how bitter it was... Only thing worse is the 'No Chew vet wrap'!!!)

My grandma used to mix water with ground ceyenne pepper and brush that in the stall where one of the horses used to chew on the wood... Maybe a habanero puree!!?

Hope you realize it was intended as a humorous comment. No I don’t think they will like the taste of the stop chew, but once they chew past that it won’t matter. I just don’t think it will last long enough for mamabahre to get successful results. They will have to reapply the stop chew regularly. It will wash off the surface and onto the surrounding soil where the chickens will be walking. That may prove to provide interesting results having the chicken’s feet in contact with stop chew or hot pepper puree.

Ok so if you can't shoot them and trapping them is pointless because of numbers then why not POISON? Say a few hamburger balls placed close to the coop laced with antifreeze would surely do the trick and you probably won't have to get rid of the bodies as they will most likely die somewhere else and if they don't die they will remember that is not a place to go for a meal!!

just thinking aloud

Because not only will the ones who survive not connect the dead ones with the chicken coop/poison meatballs but poison will kill everything else that consumes it as well.

If you can't shoot in your area then your best defense is the hot wire IMO.

I appreciate the suggestion. Thinking outside the box isn't a bad thing, I just don't think I'm comfortable laying poison, if they didn't eat it all my dog might get it and kill herself for one thing...Too many risks..

Hmm, we are going to check the coop a couple of times during the night just to see if we can catch them in the act...Then go from there.
