Paint for roost boards

Hi All, I use 2x4s with the long up as roosts. I painted with an indoor/outdoor primer, then outdoor acrylic paint. When I took them out to clean with a hose, dish soap, and brush, the paint flaked off where the poop was thickest. Have any of you found a paint/primer that can stand up to this kind of stress, or is it impossible to keep paint bonded with this kind of abuse?

If you painted them to provided protection to the wood to make it last longer honestly i would just water seal it. That way it actually soaks in the wood and seals it from the elements and will make it last so much longer then paint ever would.

It helps the poop come off easier too in my experience doing it that way.

So that gets to the question of why I painted them... We painted the entire interior with white acrylic, hoping to make cleaning easier and to give mites fewer hiding places. If white paint is impossible to maintain on roosts then I will revisit bare or sealed wood, but I was curious as to whether anyone had been able to make this work...

Maybe some more people will respond to answer that question. When i first got my birds i had a temp house that was painted with red outdoor paint and even with no washing or extra abuse it started peeling and my chickens ate it. It did not due no harm and i dont think it really would since its all pretty much non toxic once dried but talk about a heart attach when all your chickens are pooping red lol

chicken poop is pretty acidic and acids eat paints so it might be far better to use something along an epoxy paint for better resistance to erosion of the paint bond.
I just leave roost bars bare and I use either an epoxy for the floor or leave them bare as well. A heavy scrub brush and oil soap and water does a good job of cleaning for me.

I don't paint anything the Chickens use. Not worth my time or effort.

I avoid painting anything, proper prep is too much work.
I would never clean the roosts, or anything in the coop, with water.
That's no help, but might get you thinking about 'cleaning'.


-I use poop boards under roosts with thin(<1/2") layer of sand/PDZ mix, sifted daily(takes 5-10mins) into bucket going to friends compost.
-Scrape big or wet poops off roost and ramps as needed.
-Pine shavings on coop floor, add some occasionally, totally changed out once or twice a year, old shavings added to run.
-Runs have semi-deep litter, never clean anything out, just add smaller dry materials on occasion, add larger wood chippings as needed.
-Nests are bedded with straw, add some occasionally, change out if needed(broken egg).
There is no odor, unless a fresh cecal has been dropped and when I open the bucket to add more poop.

That's how I keep it 'clean', have not found any reason to clean 'deeper' in 5 years.
