has anyone tried to use burnt oil (from car, etc). that is the old way of protecting wood. I have heard that this would be toxic for chickens but I do remember no chicken died years ago when I saw it and that was a good protection from lice and mites too.

the other idea is to burn wood but I don't know if it would be hard to clean.

I oil my roosts.
Easy to clean. Keeps the wood nice. Kills mites.
I wet old rags clean the roost w/soapy water then saturate with oil. The more you treat the wood the better it gets.

Mineral oil it soaks in better Some people use leenseed something with heavy viscosity.

true. it should never be used inside. but I live in a hot climate and keep forgetting that many people need closed pens for their chickens. I will probably use motor oil for any wood outside and a healthier solution for the inside.
