Are there any paints I should not use on the coop

An unoccupied coop can be painted with any paint rated for exterior use. Never use interior paint outside, even if its on the inside of the coop.

I use water based paint inside the coop. I don't put it on floors or roost bars very thick, more like a white wash to prevent slipping.

I don’t really know I guess lead-based paint would be bad for anybody, but isn’t that stuff not even made anymore ?anyway, the interior and exterior of my duck house I used exterior super weatherproof paint two coats because , you know , ducks

Welcome to BYC. You can get barn paint cheaper than most other types. (Check at Walmart, Lowe's, or other home improvement stores. ) It holds up really well.

Outside shouldn't matter. Ours is stained. Inside, it's kitchen paint. Seems to keep the dander from hanging on the walls as much and easy to sweep or wipe clean.

Like @Debbie292d mentioned above, stain is wonderful. We have never painted our coops, but stained them all, inside and out. Stain darkens the wood and brings out the grain, it protects the wood too. Once it's dry and airs off, it's safe for the birds.
