No offense to Storey's Guide but those recommendations seem a wee bit unrealistic for anyone to abide by. I have used these size cages for small to medium sized bantams for close to 20 years and they have done just fine. I only have them in there during breeding season, the rest of the year they are in larger areas. For small pen matings they work great, you can have many of them in smaller area.
If I went by that guide I would have to have a section to house chickens....haha
And FYI, those cages only cost me about $30-40 to build for each one. With new lumber and wire and hinges to boot.
