My parents have a lone turkey poult that is about 5-6 weeks old. A chicken hatched it and it's sibling, but the chickens killed the other one, so my parents brought in this one and have been raising it in the house alone. It is super bonded to them and will just hang out with them, sleep in their laps, follow them around the house, etc. But they want to get him a pal since he really doesn't like being alone, and also once he is outside he won't get to hang out with people as much.
They wanted me to find out what gender would be best to get, since they can't tell what gender their baby is yet. I found a guy on Craigslist who has some Royal Palm/Narragansett mixes about the same age their turkey poult, but obviously they are unsexed at this point. He also has some Royal Palms that are 1-1.5 months older, that he can tell the sexes apart. So should they just get another unsexed one the same age and hope for the best, or should they get an older female, so that if theirs turns out to be a boy they have a pair, and if it turns out the be a female they have two females? (I figure they can always add a Tom if they want/need to in that scenerio.) I think one of my Mom's main concerns is ending up with a Tom/s with no females who then injure her chickens trying to mate with them.
So what is the best sex or (unsexed) to get? And would a turkey poult 1.5 months older get along with their younger one, or would the size difference make that risky?
