palawans

i just got a pair of palawans about a month ago i have them in a 8x9 pen my question is for people who have them or other tender birds what would be the best and least exspensive way to heat their pen i will be puttin plastic around it

My husband bought a baseboard heater for our coop. It was 37 dollars and is cheap to run. It has a wire heater thingy and it touchable so no one get hurt or burned.

You live in Georgia dont you?
I'm in south Georgia and never had to heat any of my peacock pheasants I had over the years, maybe on some of our super cold nights, which are just in the upper 20's for a couple hours, put a heat lamp in the coop, but outside that, I never did anything for them. Now if you are in N Georgia it may be a little different.

Congrats on the palawans though, those are the top prize in them, them and the rothchilds mountain peacock pheasants, sure do miss them!!

i have heard mixed opinions on this but alot of people have told me that theyneed heat when the temps get below 35 but yes i live in central ga about 25 min from john mason it often gets down in the mid to low 20s and upper teens will the palawans be ok in that cold with plastic around them and a lamp also what temp do you think in your experience can they handle ok with out heat .thanks, they are late 09 hatch so the male is not even begain to color i lucked up and had a friend in tn that was down sizeing and gave them to be for a real steal only 375 for the pair

yep he'll be 3 before he colors up, thats the only part that stinks about them.
I never had trouble with any of mine, without plastic. Like I said on the worst nights I would just put a heat lamp in the coop, but by all means do what you feel most comfortable with with them as they are hard to replace, but I dont think you'll have trouble with them, mainly the northern climates are where they have to really watch the peacock species down here they do pretty good.
Congrats again, let me know when they start producing!
Charles Hill has had them before and still has the rothchild, grey and germaines, dont think he does too much in the winter for his either and he's near Athens, little plastic's all I seen

ok thanks im glad to hear that i should not have problems i will probably put plastic around them to be safe and watch them good and play it by hear on the heat thanks again

That's what I do, I wouldnt worry about the heat unless you know you are going to get one of those hard freeze nights
