We recently bought some R.I.Rs. about 1 year old. One hen has a bright red comb and the remaining 4 have somewhat a little pale looking combs. they where part of a 11 hen and 1 roo flock. when we bought them there were only 5 hens and the roo left as the owners were moving. I wonder if the other buyers bought younger hens and We got some older hens perhaps?
any thoughts?

Comb color usually does not remain constant over a chicken's life. A bright red comb is usually indicative of a hen that is in good health and is laying. However, a hen's comb usually loses some of its's color due to being in molt, or internal parasites, or a circulatory problem. As long as they seem to be acting normally and eating and pooping OK, I wouldn't worry about them.
