Panic!! Help One Eye Closed!

I bet she either got something in her eye or she scratched it. Geese are very hardy and other than closing the eye she seems to be acting normal, also read that when it's hot the poop will be watery, alot of times my goose and ducks poop is watery. I'd just wash her eye out real good with the saline and put the terrimycin salve in the eye and like the other poster said keep her from washing it off right away. Hopefully it's just dust. Will be waiting to hear how she is after treatment.

Going to do the eye thing in about an hour.... will post when done and when I see her going one way or the other -- -hopefully BETTER!!!

Well here's a late update.... I didn't put the ointment on her back then or do anything because that night her eye looked ok and she started acting normal. That was 2 weeks ago apparenty since it's september already.

She didn't squint or close her eye for 2 weeks and acted pretty normal really.....

Now yesterday - 2 weeks later I see her standing with that eye closed again in the middle of the day..... she opens and closes it frequently but squints it and keeps it shut a lot.... When she honks or others start honking she opens it and looks normal and runs around.....

I don't know!!!!!! Should I just put some terramycin in it as a precaution? Could she have scratched it again?

She is hanging around the chicken pen, eating some of Bill's 20% Flockraiser crumbles (but also eats cracked corn and lots of grass - so that cuts the protein) - she drinks from the pool like the other geese about once a day (it's a saline pool so couldn't be bad... they been doing it for 6 months). They swimm in the pond, run around, etc.

I don't know.... I guess I can get her down and flush her eye with saline or put some terramycin in it just to be safe.... Thoughts????

I believe I'd try to get a good look at whats going on with that eye, from a distance it might look okay but you need to look at it closely, wash it our with some saline or warm salt water then put either terramycin or Neosporin in and around it, since it's so dry there she colud have dirt in it or she may have scratched it on something, but better to look closely and treat since it's been going on a while.

Ok will do.... they get in the big pond... and have 3 fresh water tubs (1' deep x 5' long) that I empty 3 times a day and keep clean and fresh water in even though they are out in the yard and have access to grass/pond/etc. I figure during this 105 temp it doesn't hurt. They're under a shade cannopy to keep water cool.....

BUT --- the others all get in it - there are feathers everywhere (moulting like crazy) and CLYDE keeps sitting in it and picking up grass/etc. dirt and roots and putting in the water so in about an hour or so he's got it looking muddier than the pond! Drives me nuts!!!

Bonnie loves to bathe and is always in the tubs just standing and puts her head in and swishes all day long in it -- she might have gotten some dirt or grass or who knows what in her eye or something from the dirt bacteria/who knows!!

I'll catch her this evening and put some saline (contact lense saline is ok right? it's what I use) in her eye and a little terramycin around it. And take a MAGNIFYING GLASS out there I have to see closely what's up with it.....

She also will stand when that eye is closed and move her head around kinda pointed down like she's dreaming, or listening to something or really, like she's dreaming... it would be like me and you sleeping and moving our head around like someone is talking to us... really like she's listening to something but her eye is closed (other is open) and she looks sleepy when she does that.... like she'd nodding off but dreaming.... I DUNNO. Maybe it's just bothering her.... other than that she's acting normal and flying and running and eating.

I got her tonight - flashlight and magnifying glass..... the normally white part of our eyes (corners near tear duct area) are real red, like irritated allergy red. I flushed her eyes with saline (just squirted it on her eyes, she didn't mind) and then put some Terramycin opthalmic(sp) ointment on a q-tip and put it in the corner of her eyes where it was red.

She went out in the solitude pen.... then she preened, and then stuck her head deep in water and swished a lot.... hopefully didn't wash it off but for a bit the ointment was in there and hopefully got some of what is going on. Didn't notice anything else.

It's hot here in Texas. No rain. Probably bacteria all over the place..... I had to edit to add this ... I keep water cleaned 3-4 times a day - I am neurotic about it during warm weather. Anything in water and I'm changing it - poo or dirt but sometimes they are sooooo quick to mess it up and Bonnie loves the tubs! Plus we have a big pond, we add fresh water daily but who knows what's out there in the environment right now... stupid weather!!!!!!! Mabye she got conjunctivitis (pink-eye) - who knows. It's not obvious without flashlight and close up observation but she keeps 1 eye closed a lot and looks like it's bothering her.

Any comments???? Thoughts??? HELP????

Still thinking it's definitely an eye irriation. Especially since everything else seems normal. Keep up with the saline washes and terramycin ointment. You should see an improvement soon. May be longer if she washes it out right away though.

How often should I put the ointment in her eye? I just put a little right in the corner with a q-tip.

Twice a day?? Morning/Night?

If it gets washed off in the water the others drink from will it be bad??
