Panting Chicks

LOL, me too Fred...spending additional, multiple, times in a cool water shower after doing chores, I am changing out their water every couple hours with cold water. That seems to help.

My flock is 3 weeks 3 days from hatch and in their coop, almost fully feathered already!

At one week, my large breed, BR's, didn't need but a 40 watt bulb, in the house brooder, for a few days ( they never did have the temps at what is said to be the "right temp" for chicks, nor a 250 watt heat lamp on them) I had to go by their behavior, especially since it is summer!!!...I would bet my last dollar that chick is too hot!!! Don't know about bantams...only had two in my whole life, and got them a month old, so they went right out to their own little coop when I brought them home.

Today is supposed to be even hotter than yesterday!!!! IMHO a 250 watt heat bulb is wayyy to hot, this time of year for that chick! Try a lower bulb, or NO light at all and see what the chick does! Good luck!

I might add a fan in the window of their coop today also!!!
OOppss, meant my chicks coop, not your one weeks old! Thought that might be confusing after reading it, sorry!!!!

Just got three new chicks - Calico Princess from the local store. No issue with temps but ONE of them (tremble) pants - head area. All three are nicely splayed out in the middle of the brooder, not near or away from the lamp.
However, they have not eaten or seem to want to drink, even when I dipped their beaks.
Shock? or something wrong with them? Sale price reduction, but damn they were acting fine in the store.
I would think it could be lung infection, breathing in some food the wrong way ... or simply a very, very nervous breed. Another one simply STOOD in place away from the other two until I redeposited her.
Hoping it is just adjustment. Will see tomorrow.

Totally different lay today. Chicks have adapted and are eating and drinking finally.
Reasons for the panting and frozen demeanor?
Probably panicked by the move. These were the oldest chicks I ever bought, near two weeks old.
1. Stores brooder was very different than my large see-through aquarium/terrarium.
2. Different hours - used to store regime of feeding I think and the much larger number of fellow gals.
That said, these are a much more docile and less active breed than the Amethyst Gems.
