Hi,
i have 3 parakeets in an aviary, and i added a nestbox for them about a month ago. They have even went into the nestbox at all until i moved it to a different area in the aviary yesterday. I noticed that the wood shavings i added in the nestbox were all scattered in the bottom of the aviary, i'm guessing the parakeets did finally go in the nestbox and decided they didnt like what i added. The pair seems to be compatiable, one of the keet's actually trys to protect the other keet out, if another bird in my aviary comes near he'll try to be aggressive towards them telling them to leave her alone.

I'm hoping they will lay eggs soon, i was thinking to make a hole in the nestbox so i could actually see when they start laying.

I'll try to post pics of the pair, one of the keets is a pretty blue and white its a nice combination hopefully if they have babies i'll get this coloration.

Thanks!!

Yea, parakeets are a bit fussy about what is put in their nestboxes lol. they may attack the other parakeet since you said you had 3, I always separated my breeding parakeets just in case, but I think that they would do okay in an aviary. What color are your parakeets? Also if you are planning on selling the babies depending on your state you may need to band them. I never banded my parakeets babies because I kept some of them and gave others to my friends. Good luck with your budgies!

It is normal for a hen to thow out the shavings. She's just organizing it for herself. She probobly already claimed it. Just be patient. You could get some eggs soon.

If they are blue and green then the babies could be any color lol. When I breed mine the female was a blue pied and the male was a light green with no black on him. They had 1 baby that is mostly yellow with a little bit of green. Then their next clutch had 1 blue baby and one green baby. I don't breed my keets any more. My parents used to breed birds but not any more lol. I currently have 6 parakeets and would love to build an aviary. what else do you have in the aviary besides the parakeets? Also if you hold the babies alot after they are fuzzy they will be really nice and friendly.

I have doves and a few quails in that aviary they all seem to get along well, no fighting problem at least not yet. I though your not suppose to touch the babies wont the parents try to abandon them that way?

I have button quails in with my parakeets and they do fine. Mine didn't abondon their babies when I touched them. You just don't want to stress the parents out. Most birds have a poor sense of smell so they wouldn't abondon them if you touched them. I held all my parakeets babies and they did fine.

My parakeets layed their first egg in the nestbox today. I was in the middle of trying to saw out a small hole in the back of the nestbox, so that i could see if the parakeet has laid any eggs yet, and there it was. Do you think i should put some wood shavings in the nestbox i had some in there but the female took them all out one by one.
I know i promised pictures we'll see tomorrow i was having trouble with my camera, i'm so excited this is going to be my first attempt or try to breed parakeets i hope more eggs will be laid but i'll be happy with however many they'll lay.

Thanks for all your guys help i appreciate it !!!!!!!!!

yay lol. You might want to try to put something near the box, to see if the female wants to use it. But they usually don't use anything in the bottom. in my parakeets first clutch there was only 1 egg, but my friend had 8 that hatched, so it could be any number of eggs. Good luck!

I'm going to go pick up some special parakeet food and some cuttlebone to provide the birds with plenty of nutrients, i've been feeding them leafy greens but they dont seem interested in them my quails sometimes bets them to it...lol
