paralysis in 2 of my hens legs, strange signs here, help!!!

I'm just starting...have lost a blue showgirl, a splash silkie, a NN pullet and I have one black silkie pullet, a buff polish roo and a red polish roo that aren't doing so well. The silkies legs are going, the buff polish's head is going crazy and almost flipping him over and the red polish is just wasting away. The one that stumps me is the red polish...he was vaccinated as a baby. The NN just stopped eating and died. Still very heavy and healthy looking..she was loaded with tumors....it's a terrible disease. Don't give up, there are more chickies out there to love

Mareks causes tumors like that. How scary. As far as getting thiamine into them I'd imagine PolyViSol as it has it. And if they young/on medicated feed to take them off that.

Leadwolf, you bring up something interesting. I wonder if the vaccine covers those who waste away. Also, seems like the most I've lost are Polish or blue/gray colored chickens. Like 16 out of 18 were blue or Polish. I guess there will be no more blue chickens for me

I think that silkies and polish are hit hardest...or so it seems. However, I had the NN get hit also. Or, I am assuming since the necropsy report isn't back yet. Maybe it has something to do with the crest??? They are just all around more delicate birds I think. Mine were all different colors so I'm not seeing the blue connection right now.

I am not looking forward to the coming months. These chickens were raised in my kitchen and my boys made them jungle gyms and playgrounds to climb on when they were peeps. They are devastated with every loss just as I am. The only reason I am trying the vitamin therapy with the silkie is because my 7 year old begged me too.

Good luck with your little polish...maybe they just are going through a rough spot and will even out soon...

thanks for all of your replys, my dad will refuse to call a vet to see what might be going on so its up to me the internet and whatever i can buy at a store. i feel so helpless, i am debating vitamin therapy like everyone has been metioning. everyone in my familt seems to think that it is worms but i am not sure if it is a good idea to worm them right now, i mean she doesnt seem sick or anything its just her leg but i just dont know about putting chemicals in her right now. ugh so stressfull, i really really REALLY hope its not meraks.

Leadwolf, your chick raising sounds like mine. I had put an old sheet on the bed and I would lay there and let the 2 Polish chicks play. They are so tame now. I hope it's nothing wrong with them. It must be even worse with children involved. I'm sorry it had to affect your kids too.

Rhodered, I don't think there's much the vet can do for you. They know next to nothing about chickens specifically. Vitamins won't hurt, I think I'll give mine some just in case. As far as worms go, the most most common worm in birds will be seen in their poop if they have alot.

Look up thiamine deficiency. If they're on medicated feed it can potentially be a problem. The way medicated feed works is by blocking the bodies use of thiamine. Come to find out it causes lameness, wobbling gait, head twiching, etc.

Thanks, Mitzi. I didn't know this about medicated feed. Maybe I'll toss this and give them unmedicated--just to be sure. And never realized that giving thiamine isn't going to help.

i think i might do some vitamin therapy, ill try polyvisol and a vitamin b complex. the issue is does anyone know where i could get polyvisol? and how do you use it. i will try to do a little research i guess. is this a good plan or does anyones else think that i should try something differant first? i hsve to admit when it comes to vitamin therapys it can all be a little confusing, how would it be if i added nutridrench to the vitamin B complex and the polyvisol?

Poly vi sol can be found at walmart or any drug store. It is a baby vitamin and can be found in any vitamin aisle. Just remember, don't get the one with iron! Once you get it, I was told to give .5 mls. per day. The dropper clearly shows this. At first, my chickens would slurp it right from between my fingers...now, they have decided that they don't like it. I mix it with a little wet food mash and yogurt. I make sure that they get that before anything else.

I have also been giving 400 ius of vitamin E. You just snip the end off the capsul and squeeze it onto a small piece of bread. They gobble it right up.

Don't know if it helps but I know that it can't hurt so I've been giving them probiotics every day also. I'd try anything at this point. I can't just sit back and wait....

Seminolewind...my chicks are almost like my kids...I love them dearly and I will do anything to make them better! I just received my gallon of Oxine in the mail and my Marek's vaccine. Tomorrow, we vaccinate. Do you know the needle size needed???? My vet is going to help me figure out all the dosages since my guys are a wide range of ages/sizes.
