Hi everyone, we have a chick that appears to have issues with his/her vision. We have been feeding it moist chick crumbs and he kind of sees where the food is but will peck closer and closer until he hits his target. His pupils don't seem to react to light and it looks like he has white lines in his eyes that look like lightning going from the centre outwards. He is substantially smaller than the others however that may be because he didn't feed as much early on as we didn't realise he had issues. He's a little barnvelder chick and is 10days old. Does anyone have ideas of what it could be/any ideas of possible treatments?
Thanks
Hadyn
1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.) --- barnvelder, 10 days old. Slightly smaller than her siblings, approx 50g
2) What is the behavior, exactly. --- pecking at air, missing target ie food. Seems to be able to move around obstacles whilst walking.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? --- noticed at 5 days
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms? --- no, all other chicks healthy
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. --- no
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. --- nothing that we can think of
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. --- initially unmedicated chick crumbs, but now on moistened medicated (ACS) chick crumb - eating independently. We have not seen her drink independently or eat dry chick crumb independently.
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. --- normal
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? --- vitamin B supplements (human tablets, given in very small doses)
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? --- treat ourselves
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help. --- unable to take a good picture of the eye
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use --- indoor run with other chicks, heat lamp and shredded paper bedding
Thanks
