The floor in the shed we converted to a coop is made out of osb particle board. I have a piece of linoleum to cover the chicken side but was wondering if I should seal the osb with paint or poly varnish.

Any thoughts?

If the top is covered with linoleum then it's the bottom that worries me.
It will absorb moisture and eventually crumble. This may take years to
happen but if you can paint the underside it may help.

Any type of particle board is a poor choice where moisture is involved.

Sure, put those kids to work.

18" should be ok since it will provide enough ventilation. Just check it
every now and then. It should be fine.

Particle board just tends to swell if any moisture gets into it. And believe me unless you're totally diligent about sealing any nook and cranny that moisture could possibly seep in, it will happen. You only have to look at kitchen laminated cupboards that have a particle board base to work out what will happen. The edges are the problem if you already have walls up, that's where the moisture seeps in, just make sure you seal it real well. As PC said, it's a poor choice where moisture is involved.

Particle Board = The Sucks
OSB = The Bettah

Pressure Treated Ply = The Greatly!

My OSB floor is open to the weather right now and let me tell you, it would suck worse if it was particle board.. Right now I've got the joints [edges] swelling up and raising to the point that I'll need to knock them down with a grinder.

Reaaaaaaaaly need to get the roof framed and up.. Blasted weather.

Priced the treated plywood. Was like $44 a sheet at the local lumber yard. They were out of cdx plywood. Guy behind the counter said this is what they use in the sheds they build.

Hope it holds up.
