Passing blood-*pic*

I suggest Necrotic enteritis. Symptoms inclue. Ruffled reathers, Reddy coloured feaces followed by dark brown. Closing eyes, not moving, not eating, not drinking. Some more feaces pictures would help!?

I'd be inclined to think about pursing this if it had continued. She was only like that on Monday, except for the non-ruffled feathers. The poo she passed after the one in the pic just bloody x3 and then they returned to normal. She's been drinking all along and her appetite is totally back to normal. No egg, and when I felt up there last night (which she wasn't happy about) I didn't feel anything.

She doesn't match this: http://www.wattagnet.com/Necrotic_enteritis__Emerging_problem_in_broilers.html I know non-broilers can get this, but there are no overt risk factors (like wet litter out there.).

I let her outside with the others yesterday afternoon and she reestablished herself at the top, of course, and thoroughly enjoyed the dust bath. I brought her back in overnight because I still have one that continues to pluck with her peepers on, and was going after her poor bald butt.

Meh.

I've heard they shed their intestinal lining sometimes, but honestly I've had chickens for 4 years and have never seen it. The thing in the upper left of the photo doesn't look like intestinal lining to me, though. She may be sloughing part of her reproductive tract... dunno how that would work out. Hope she recovers for you.

I am starting to wonder if that was an ovary in there, but doesn't look quite like any other pics I've seen and it was obviously mixed with poo. If she actually laid an egg on Monday, it will have been 5 days since she gave one, and I can't feel an egg in there anywhere. She's still acting like she wants to lay one, and every now and then her vent will get going, but so far nothing. She wasn't happy when I checked her last night; I went up and not down and it certainly felt like a large enough cavity to hold an egg, but there was nothing in there.

Her abdomen doesn't look or feel squishy or swollen, either, although she's not keen to be massaged.

I'm stumped.

I don't have any advice other than to say chickens are incredibly resilient. We have a hen that prolapsed twice and just laid her first egg in 2 months. Several times we came close to culling her but she seemed to rally. She is such a trooper that we finally ended up building a second coop for her and a couple of other special needs chickens. Hope your buff orpington gets well!

No kidding! Given that she's acting normal, I'm thinking I may just put her outside and bring the plucker in and see how that goes. Thank you for your well wishes!
